Health is wealth

”Health is wealth”, are 3 little words of great importance! And these are the words that we have been brought up with. Giving undue credit for the same, a group of 12 from Axa Business Services, headed by Kiran Jayaraj, guided by Bhushan and supported by Indrakka, including a doctor- Dr. Abhilash Anand from KIMS, conducted a health camp on 20th Nov 2010.
With appropriate check up, considerable amount of information on the prevailing ailments were collected and appropriate medication for diseases such as cold, cough, scabies were taken. These, along with de-worming and calcium tablets were taken as per the doctor's instructions.
This is how the health camp progressed:
  • 118 children along with 10 members of the staff were lined up.
  • De-worming tablets were given each and everyone
  • Each child's weight was checked
  • Each child was produced before the doctor, who conducted a check up and prescribed appropriate medication
Top 3 areas of concern:
  • Malnutrition: Almost 99% of the children suffer from acute malnutrition
  • Scabies is another disease of critical concern
  • 4 critical cases that of thyroid, eyes and a possible case of heart problem were identified and appropriate scans were suggested by the doctor.
Recommendations:
  • Malnutrition: 1 egg / day for atleast 3 months in order to build the immunity system and tackle stunted growth.
  • Scabies: Community awareness has to be developed in order to tackle the disease.
  • Critical cases have to be checked immediately and treatment has to be provided accordingly.

Follow up (20 th Dec 2010)

Met with the foundation head and committee, upon which one egg / day was sanctioned.

4 critical cases have been sent for diagnosis and treatment.
  • The child suffering from thyroid will need to take treatment for 6-7 years.
  • 2 children suffering from eye problem need to use spectacles which were provided.
  • The child showing symptoms of heart problem does not suffer from any cardiac issues, but from acute malnutrition, which needs to be curbed immediately.
PS: Further research on the food aspect and good diet plan at cheaper cost needs to be conducted. Further research on building the immunity system and to curb stunted growth in children needs to be conducted. Awareness problem on the importance of tackling malnutrition and scabies needs to be conducted among the parents. Those who are interested in conducting further research / volunteer for any such activities in the future are free to contact Bhushan at 93412 54570 / Ravindran at 83744 35503.

I know you. Do you know me?

I am Vara Lakshmi

That's me - 1st from left!
What do I tell you? Nothing much but THANK YOU!

Thank you, for supporting me all along: with your beautiful smile, with your kind words, with ample food, with good books, with a classroom, with amazing teachers, with a GREAT school, and with the Sponsorship program itself!

A BIG BIG thank you for supporting me with your LOVE!

It is your support that has given me this great opportunity called Education. Today I am in 5th standard! I draw and paint and can speak English, Hindi and Telugu fluently, and I really wish to continue my studies.

All those who have supported me till now, I thank them from the bottom of my heart. All those who are new to this- please take some of your precious time and think about what I have written. YOU are my inspiration. Your thoughts, words and actions inspire me. Thank you!

I am Devendra

I know, you too are batting for me!
My day begins at 5! I tend to cows! My mother is a milk seller and I love her a lot. I am 11 years old.

“I want to see that beautiful smile on my mother’s face very often,” if you asked me, what I desires the most!

I love to go to school and School is my favorite place.

Having learnt the ideal values called hard-work and perseverance at such a young age, he dreams of joining the police force one day!

Academically bright, he is the driving force in his family that brightens his mother’s heart! A loved and valued student in his class, today he is in need of support to continue his education and fulfill his dreams.

I am Prasanna

I am Prasanna and I am fortunate- for I have a school of my own! I have friends whom I can smile with. I have teachers who are my family. I see love and laughter around me. I do not know how I would have survived, if it weren’t for the SCHOOL.

Today, I am in 7th Std. So far, I have understood that, the right way to success is EDUCATION. I love studying. I like to learn new languages. I love to sing and dance and want to become a pediatrician one day.

Today, I am in need of a little support from you, so that I can break this illusionary bondage called fear. Today, I am in need of a little support from you, so that I can complete my studies. Knowledge is my power and I know that one day, I shall definitely achieve my goal. I shall stand strong and remember your kindness forever!

Prsasanna is to the right, and Prasanna is right :)
Shivamma to the left .. But not one to be left behind

This is Shivamma

Ask Shivamma what she wants and don’t be surprised if the answer is proper food, clothing, shelter and a DEGREE.

Well, yes education is one of her basic need and this is what she has to say, “I want to become a doctor. I no longer want to see my mother or any mother sick. I want to take care of the sick and help them in every way possible.”

What a noble thought! Kind indeed is her heart, and strong indeed is her determination- the determination to get educated, help her family and serve others.

These are the goals and needs of a few students studying at Satsang Vidyalaya, in the town of Madnapalli.

There are many Devendras, many Prasannas, many Vara Lakshmis, and many Shivammas who have big dreams in their young hearts!

They say ‘Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime!’

With this vision and mission, the Satsang Foundation, reaches out to the entire race to be a part of a Sponsorship program for the Satsang Vidyalayas.

Come sponsor a child! Come and be the foundation for these young seeds, so that they can grow into big trees and shelter many others (Sponsorship brochure is here)

It is YOU who can make the DIFFERENCE!

Do these stars have stethescopes - in their sights?

Like us, you too will be delighted to know that these children have cleared the Zilla Parishad exams with DISTINCTION!! They have scaled another step in their education ladder this year by moving to higher classes in government schools.

Krishnaveni, a carefree little child, happy to go to our school – The Satsang Vidyalaya, developed acute pain and discomfort in the eye to such an extent that led her to believe that there must be some cure for the malady, only a doctor would know. Though she got well, the eye pain was the turning point in her life. Today she still recalls the incident and has a gleam in her eye and proudly says- “I must study well and become an eye doctor”.

Pushpalatha, a good friend and classmate of Krishnaveni who studied with her in The Satsang Vidyalaya , is also interested in becoming a Doctor. Ask her why and she smiles and says, “I want to serve people.” Believing that hard work is the key to success, she gives her 100% to reach her ambition and is thankful for the good education that she has received which has helped her recognize her goal.

Bharathi & Sahana, have six brothers and sisters. They have no father. Their mother works in a hospital close by. Sahana is very good in academics and is the topper of the school. Sahana looks up to her sister and wants to follow her foot steps

Chitra is interested in Science & Maths. She has bagged the highest marks in Science in her class this year. She lives in the Thanda (tribal settlement) nearby. With a difficult family– each day is a challenge. This little girl is already engaged to be married. But this has not stopped her from going for what she wants. Grabbing the little opportunity she has to go to school, she has shown that a little encouragement and support can help anyone reach the zenith.

Rajitha too wants to be a doctor. She is good in Yoga and helps in teaching other children too. Cauvery, her elder sister is her role model. Why? Cauvery who was studying along with her in the Vidyalaya has now got a free scholarship - admission in the residential school - Peepal Grove School due to her hard work and sincerity. Rajitha is also fascinated by the Anchor’s role on TV. Perhaps we have to wait and watch if we would see her as a doctor or an anchor!

The question to you - dear reader - is that you probably agree on the importance of a role model.

We are guessing that you are already successful in what you do. Won't it be wonderful if you can come by and be a role model for some of the children who are still in school? We would love to hear from you, if you would want to spend some role modelling time, with the children in Madanapalle!
